Something new

So, Nick and I are trying something new. Along with our new workout routine and healthier living habits (we have stopped drinking soda and attempts are being made to cut back on eating out). We are also going to exercise our minds. On Saturday we went to Barnes and Nobel and grabbed some books. We decided that it would be fun to read the same book.

Our first book was "The Looking Glass Wars" by Frank Beddor. I realize this book is geared towards teens but, we wanted something fun and quick for our first read. The book is about how "Alice in Wonderland" came to be. To give you a short summary; Princess Alyss (yes, not Alice) Heart witnesses the deaths of her mother and father at the hands of her Aunt Redd. She jumps into the pool of tears and winds up in Victorian England where she is adopted by a Reverend. Where she meets a friend of her adopted fathers, Charles Dogdson (aka Lewis Carroll). He seems to believe her story and writes up the book "Alice's Adventures Underground" upon her reading she is hurt and eventually she tries to move past her thoughts and hopes of returning to Wonderland and live by Victorian standards. Fast forward a couple of years and Alyss is 20 years old when people from Wonderland come looking for her. The good guys, Alyssians, get her first and bring her back to Wonderland to face off against her evil Aunt Redd to become the true Queen of Wonderland.

To be honest Nick and I were hoping for more. It's not a great book. Nick and I both read it in a day. We didn't have any big issues with the book other than for Nick he said it wasn't up the level of a Harry Potter book. In the end I guess our imaginations were bigger than this book. Which, if you read the book that might be kind of funny to you.

My next read is a classic, Emma by Jane Austin.

My bird has to wear an e-collar, yes you read that correctly...

So, I have had Beauty since I was in 6th grade (10-11years of age) so that makes him 15-16 years old now. Lately he has been over plucking under his left wing to the extent that he has created a wound. The vet has put him on anti-depressants to try and keep him from re-opening the wound while having him on antibiotics. The first anti-depressant didn't work so they put him on Prozac. In this case they are thinking he has decided to "obsessively" maintain himself to the point where he needs to be put on the same meds as a person with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).

The Prozac did not work. What I neglected to mention is that I have to give him these medications that are in liquid form through a syringe. It's never a pleasant experience for him. In fact I'm sure he hates me.

Since the drugs did not work and, he still has the bloody spot/scab that he reopens the veterinarian has decided, as a last resort, that Beauty must now wear an Elizabethan collar (e-collar for short). You've probably seen dogs wear them. Nick and I have had to put Tobie in one on a couple of different occasions. You may have even seen a cat or two... but, a bird? That's something special.

Here are the pictures for your enjoyment.

Weekends

I am starting off my Monday thinking about how great my weekend was. Friday was your typical work day. I was seriously working for the weekend. I couldn't wait until 5pm to bust out of the School of Medicine. Nick and I went and dropped off the rent and made our way to Anytime Fitness. I forgot how much fun it is to workout with a partner. Got over a half hour of cardio in on the treadmill and bike. Did some core exercises then hit the machines. I must admit I like that my muscles feel like Jell-O when I leave the gym. I also look forward to that muscle ache that means that they got a nice workout.

Saturday morning I woke up and made some biscuits then headed off to Key Largo for my first pilates experience. It was nice and relaxing. I'm not sure that I felt as much of a work out as I do with the core and step classes I have taken but, I'm typically not in the mood to do too much on a Saturday morning. When I got home Nick and I took a trip to Dillard's to snag a Mardi Gras outfit for him. I wound up buying a few things myself.

Previously we had planned to go see Bill Clinton speak on Saturday but, Nick's best friend wound up in the ER. Nick went to babysit while they were at the ER. Rashad is ok but he was in severe pain for hours.

Nick and I went to dinner with Stephanie and Chris at Addison's. Then to the Mardi Gras party held in the Historic Senior Building on Stephen's College Campus. There was free Abita Turbo Dog, Hurricanes, and King Cake. One of the cool things was the balloon maker. He made a Ghostbusters suit for a lady including photon pack. The live band was great! Nick and I got some dancing in.

Sunday was super lazy because I was hung over. I really am feeling old. I had 2 glasses of wine and a Hurricane. I spent most of my day sleeping off the headache and watching Mythbusters. Instead of wasting out time watching the Super Bowl Nick and I went to see Juno. It was nice to watch it alone together in a large theater. Not to mention the fact that it was a great movie. We got home just in time to watch the Giants celebrating their victory without spending the hours nail biting
Here is a link to photos from Mardi Gras.

I finally got around to putting the pictures of Tyler, Nick's new nephew, up online too.
